“MEMORIAS ARGENTINAS” (2023) – As it is well known, many of the Argentine folk rhythms have African roots. This musical piece is inspired by three of them: chacarera, zamba, and malambo. Each of these styles is performed and danced in different regions of the country, extending throughout the national territory.
Understanding that it is impossible to encompass in a single musical composition all the influences that African heritage has had on Argentine folk music, this suite is an attempt to
preserve, pay homage to, and renew some of those inherited elements after centuries.

Commissioned and dedicated to the California Youth Symphony, Palo Alto, California, USA,
and Maestro Leo Eylar, Conductor.

“EL ABASTO” expresses my need to reconnect with the music of not only of my country and my city, but of my own personal history as well. The music that has surrounded me as an Argentine and as a Buenos Aires native since my childhood. The music that played on the kitchen radio where my father spent every Sunday morning cooking for the family until noon.

The intention is to address one of the distinctive styles of typical Argentine tango, without presuming stylistic purity, but allowing the mixture of this style with symphonic music, using tonal harmonies that are developed from a more contemporary perspective. A fusion among many other possible ones.

Dedicated to my dad, who surely would have enjoyed it very much.

  • Also for orchestra

CANDOM is a work written to capture the feelings produced by the color and speed of life in the two big cities of the Río de la Plata – Buenos Aires and Montevideo – taking advantage of the rhythm that unites them better than any other: the candombe. This rhythm with African roots, today undeniably Uruguayan, in other centuries was as much from Montevideo as it was from Buenos Aires.

Composed in February, this work is influenced by the advent of the carnival. And since the Rio de la Plata carnival is surrounded by characters that evoke a mixture of joy and nostalgia, Candom goes through a lot of emotions, like every human being that goes through this existence with passion and commitment.

World premiere of “Candom” – for string quartet – This piece was composed in January and February 2022, written and dedicated to Dmitry Danilov Music Agency, “The New Melodies” II International Composers Competition, St. Petersburg, Russia. A contest in which I had the honor of being a jury.

During the last week of composition a war has started on the other side of the world.I dedicate this work to all those human beings who fight for peace, to all those who contribute every day offering their own peace through the love of their actions, to all who believe in humanity, who respect people’s lives and who take care of all life forms on the planet. And I dedicate this work to childhood, hoping that some day the children of the world will not know the word “war”  and be amazed to learn of its anachronistic meaning.

  • Also for chamber orchestra and symphonic orchestra.

I “SAN TELMO”  The typical 3-3-2 subdivision with its origin in the milonga, has become one of the characteristic styles of the music from Buenos Aires in the 20th century. It is unmistakably recognized to the world as Buenos Aires music – both in its “adagio” version and faster tempos. Bringing this genre to the symphony orchestra and shaping its formal, melodic, and harmonic possibilities is an extremely stimulating game.

My desire to spread the modern tango style of my city is manifested in this movement. While combining it with the sonata form – one of the most typical forms of classicism – the melodies add a touch of surprise and novelty while intertwining with the harmonies. This mixture of music remains in the audience’s memory in a way that makes them feel at home.

II “LA BOCA” combines the Bachian counterpoint with one of the most typical rhythms of Argentine tango: the milonga –a very danceable style par excellence in tango. The challenge was to combine contemporary and personal harmonies with the most popular sounds of my country. Let me tell you more about LA BOCA:

The neighborhood, the people, the port, the history of the city, the “porteñity”, all this is born at the corners of the colorful and unique district of “La Boca”. This was where emigrants from around the world found asylum, work, shelter and a new life many years ago. Remaining unalterable for the porteños over the years, “La Boca” changes colors in the gaze of each passerby at different times of the day.

The movement sounds through various textures: from the most contrapuntal to homophonic, passing through melody & accompaniment, mixed with orchestral colors and harmonies that span from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century. Providing the opportunity to be surprised by the new, while perceiving the constant allusion to the historical.

“PALERMO” is an orchestral work that reflects the eclecticism typical of some neighborhoods in large cities, in which foreigners and locals mix, combining the simplicity and sophistication of all walks of life. Nature, lakes, walks, shops, tourism, fairs, restaurants, TV channels and radios form the melting pot of options, while music of all kinds sound at its corners and an endless number of languages are spoken in its streets at any time of the day.

With a melody originally inspired by the typical “criollo waltz” far from aspiring to stylistic purity the work presents sounds from the world combined with the musical nuance of Buenos Aires. This cosmopolitan city warmly welcomes those who visit and those who would stay for the rest of their lives.

“REMINISCENCES” is a piece based on images. It describes taking off from life and going out into the world with all of the implied hopes and fears. It also addresses the idea of leaving everything in the past behind.  It evokes a cloak of melancholy, filled with those subtle reminiscences of experiences we once lived, understanding that we will never live them again.

Also for ensemble: Fl, Bb Cl, El. Gtr, Perc, Pno, Vln, Vla, Vc.

“En la orilla” – Hope and desperation: the hope of achieving a happier life; the desperate need to risk everything to make a dream come true; the most absolute and irrevocable loss of the most precious thing we have; and the impossibility of turning back. The pain that seeps into the soul of those who remain behind to appreciate what happened.

A Salvadoran man and his one year, 11 month old daughter were found on the banks of the Rio Grande on Sunday June 23, 2019.  They had drowned after being swept away by the river current while trying to cross in Matamoros, Mexico. They came all the way from the Mexican State of Tamaulipas with hopes of reaching the United States. They sank at the sight of the girl’s mother, before reaching the US coast.

Dedicated to Valeria and Oscar Martínez who lost their lives trying to cross the Rio Grande, in search of a happier life.

The march is undertaken by each of the actors competing for the leading role, appearing in each case as the leading voice. Not only the timbres, but the ideas, which seem main at one point, become secondary at others. A constant search for who it is that actually leads the discourse; this will appear clear at times and blurred at others, leaving the listener with the question: what was the theme?

Also for ensemble: Fl, Bb Cl, El. Gtr, Perc, Pno, Vln, Vla, Vc.

The sensation of vertigo and the “fugitive” movement of their voices give “The Chase” its main characteristic: a constant change and urgency. This emotional piece for percussion and chamber orchestra represents the advent of the precipice with no escape.
